In May it will be the 10 year anniversary of the disappearance of, then 3 year old, Maddie Mccann. As it has been 10 years since the most looked for missing person actually went 'missing', there has been another dose of news articles about it, with new speculations, theories, and people airing their views.
I never ever thought I'd be saying this, but for once, I actually agree with Katie Hopkins. On her Sunday morning LBC show, Hopkins made a very controversial, and very interesting statement. She said "Maddie wasn't lost because somebody took her, Maddie was lost because she was left to be found." Now, regardless of whether Maddie was kidnapped, or whether her parents killed her, or any of the theories that are being thrown around at the moment, this statement is very much true. Kate and Gerry Mccann left their three children in their hotel room alone, while they went out for dinner and drinks with friends. Now, I haven't got children, nor do I want them for a very long time, but I still know that it is unacceptable to leave your children, especially as young as 3 and below, alone for even a short length of time, but to leave them to go to dinner? I just don't understand it, just take them with you, get a babysitter or order in a takeout!
There are so many different theories about Maddie's disappearance, and none of them quite add up. If she was kidnapped, then how come police dogs smelt the scent of corpse in the Mccann's holiday house, and why was Maddie's own blood found behind the sofa and in the boot of the car? But if Kate and Gerry did have something to do with it, then where's the body? Surely they can't have got rid of it that well in such a short space of time-I mean it's been 10 years and she still hasn't been found-dead or alive.
I was discussing this topic with my uni housemates last night and it was interesting to hear everyone's opinions on the topic and why they believed/didn't believe a specific theory. There were two things that we did all agree on though. One-Kate and Gerry are responsible for the disappearance of their child, whether it was directly their fault or not. And two-We will (unfortunately) never find out what happened to poor Maddie Mccann.
My opinion? To me, there's just too much evidence that points to the parents. I mean, there was Maddie's blood found behind a sofa in their hotel room and in the boot of their hire car. There was the scent of corpse in their wardrobe. The next day, rather than looking for their 'missing' daughter, they played tennis together and walked along the beach hand-in-hand. They washed Madeleine's favourite toy, CuddleCat, the one thing they had left of her. Now, I can't say what I would do in a situation like this because it has never actually happened to me (Thank God), however I can say with some certainty that I wouldn't be playing tennis the day after my child was abducted. I also don't think I would ever wash that toy. I think my mum still has a toy that I was given when I was born, which was passed to my sister when she was born that has NEVER been washed in 19 years, and me and Poppy are both still alive. It just doesn't quite add up to me. Also, in questioning, Kate didn't answer a single question out of the 48 asked to help in the investigation. The one question she did answer was: "Are you aware that in not answering the questions you are jeopardising the investigation, which seeks to discover what happened to your daughter?" To which she answered: "Yes, if that’s what the investigation thinks." This is another puzzling aspect of the story to me. Surely, if you were innocent, you would want to give as much information as possible if it could lead to your reunion with your daughter. Also, if you were wrongly accused of being guilty, wouldn't you want to prove your innocence? It's all very very strange. But if the Mccann's are innocent, then not only have they lost a daughter for 10 years, they have also had to deal with the whole world thinking that they did it.
I have two of my own theories on how it happened. I'm not saying that either of them are right. I'm not saying that either of them are wrong. I'm just saying that with the information given, to me these are the most plausible situations:
Maddie's parents want to go out for dinner and don't want to take the kids, but can't find a babysitter. Being doctors, they have some sedative with them and decide to drug their children to make them sleep throughout the night. Now either, Maddie is given an overdose which kills her, and the Mccann's deal with it by hiding the body and faking an abduction, or they underdose her and she wakes up before they return home, still groggy, gets out of bed and falls over -behind the sofa- due to the drugs, hitting her head (explaining the blood behind the sofa), and then the parents deal with it by hiding the body and faking her abduction. Either way, I don't think Maddie was kidnapped. I think that Maddie was accidentally killed by her parents. However, my one flaw in this theory is where the bloody hell is the body and how have they gotten rid of it so well that it still, 10 years later, hasn't been found?! The one reason that I'm still considering the kidnapping is that it's much easier to find a dead body than an alive one? Hell she could have been kidnapped and sex trafficked and has ended up elsewhere in Europe. She may be dead, she may even still be alive. We just don't know and it is heartbreaking. I hope that the parents had nothing to do with it other than leaving their children, but I really doubt that is the case. Either way, they should be done for neglect.
It's a really difficult situation to understand, and I don't think we ever will. Whether Maddie is alive or dead, whoever did it will take it to the grave with them. Do I think Maddie will be found alive? No. Do I think Maddie will be found at all? No. Do I hope Maddie will be found, dead or alive? Of course. This poor little girl deserves the world to know what happened to her, and if she is dead, she deserves a proper funeral. My thoughts go out to you Maddie. Either keep fighting, or rest in peace, sweetheart.
